Direct Experience

I always try to run in on the beach at the end of the day when I’m in San Diego and the weather is nice,  (Which, I guess is most of the time).  I didn’t understand the significance that the two images below had for me until I looked at them next to each other and realized the connection.  One person, alone, in the moment and fully committed to the task at hand… flow.  Add to that the moment the photographer, fresh off of his run pauses for few brief moments to take a couple of shots with his camera phone.  Also, in the moment, alone, and fully committed to the task at hand.  For me, these images, embody the concept of “direct experience”.

After several false starts, we will be creating a new portfolio based on the concept of “direct experience” or “flow”.  In the next month will also be launching a new blog around this concept and welcome your comments, input and suggestions.  Why not make your own personal experiences an integral part of the overall experience?  Please consider submitting stories, images and videos of times when you found yourself in a state of “flow” for our blog.

We are also actively looking for new subjects to photograph for this project.  If you, or anyone you know has an interesting, unusual, adventurous or otherwise unique career or hobby that allows that person to operate in a state of “flow” we’d love to photograph it.  Please submit your experiences to: submissions@direct-experience.net
